Is single crystal sapphire blue?
Industrial-grade single-crystal sapphire is usually colorless and transparent (pure α-Al₂O₃), and its name "sapphire" comes from the material composition (the same as natural sapphire).
The blue color of natural sapphire comes from titanium/iron impurities, while industrial synthesis can control impurities to achieve colorless, blue or other colors (such as for jewelry).
Note: In high-end applications such as optical windows and semiconductor substrates, colorless and transparent are necessary characteristics.
Single crystal sapphire is so hard, why does it break?
High hardness ≠ high toughness!
Although single crystal sapphire has high hardness, its fracture toughness is low (about 2.5 MPa·m¹/²), and cracks are prone to propagation when subjected to local impact.
Can sapphire be processed with microstructures, such as drilling and grooving?
Yes. Through CNC precision machining, high-precision hole machining (minimum hole diameter can reach φ0.1mm), chamfering, grooving and other complex structures can be achieved, which are suitable for sensor windows, valve plates and special-shaped optical components.
Is sapphire material suitable for high temperature environment?
Applicable. Sapphire has a melting point of up to 2040°C and has excellent stability at high temperatures, does not deform or delaminate, and can be used in thermal environments ≥1000°C for a long time, such as infrared detection windows, high-temperature observation windows, vacuum furnace windows, etc.
