Industrial-grade single-crystal sapphire is usually colorless and transparent (pure α-Al₂O₃), and its name "sapphire" comes from the material composition (the same as natural sapphire).

The blue color of natural sapphire comes from titanium/iron impurities, while industrial synthesis can control impurities to achieve colorless, blue or other colors (such as for jewelry).
